My Story with Hair
I’ve been fascinated by hair from a young age. Even then, I think I loved the creativity and transformation it offered. In my later teenage years, I was discouraged from going into hairdressing, but I’m stubborn, and whilst it’s taken many years, I truly believe it’s never too late to rewrite your story and change direction.
For several years, we bumbled along and fought with the stresses of even getting to the barbershop with our youngest son, and then, lockdown hit us square in the face! That’s when the seed was sown…
…And that’s where my journey started. I started to cut my family’s hair: my husband and three boys. Being the oldest on the training course, I was known affectionately as ‘mum’, and Blaker’s Blades was born.
Do I still love cutting hair? A trillion per cent yes! One of my clients’ partners asked me whether I found it therapeutic. Absolutely, because it’s methodical, precise and creative all at once, which suits me perfectly.
What Shaped My Approach
Growing up, I saw firsthand how important patience, understanding and dignity can be. As an amputee, my wonderful mum, has always approached life with quiet strength and determination. Watching her navigate challenges with resilience taught me the importance of adapting to how someone is feeling and meeting people with kindness and respect.
My grandad was also a huge influence. He lived with us while I was growing up and brought a calm, gentle presence to everyday life. He loved to tinker on the piano and tell stories about his time in the Navy. He was patient, thoughtful and quietly reassuring. These qualities have stayed with me and helped shape how I connect with others today.

Understanding Different Needs
As a mum of three boys, I’ve personally experienced how different every child can be, and how important patience, flexibility and understanding are in helping someone feel comfortable. This has given me a deeper appreciation for sensory needs, communication styles and the importance of creating calm, supportive environments.
These experiences shape my approach today, helping me adapt to each individual and create a space where clients feel understood and at ease.
My Approach Today
Whether I’m supporting a fidgety child, a busy family, or a more mature client who appreciates a little extra time, my aim is always the same: to create a calm, comfortable experience where people feel listened to and cared for.
For many of my clients, the haircut is only part of the visit. It’s also about a friendly face arriving with time, patience and a calm approach.
