Calm, adaptive haircuts for clients with medical conditions and mobility challenges
Several years ago, I visited a client living with COPD, a respiratory condition that affects breathing and energy levels. He was at home, supported by his wife, with an oxygen tank nearby. His setup was carefully managed, and even small changes required thought and planning.
To trim around his ears and the sides of his head, we would need to remove the tubing that sat around his ears. But once it came off, we only had a short window before it needed to go back on.
Seven minutes, as I recall.
Seven minutes to carefully complete the work, then restore everything exactly as it was.
For some, that might feel like a panic situation.
But for me, it became about calm focus.
I didn’t rush. I didn’t panic. I simply concentrated on the task in hand, working methodically, carefully, and with reassurance. The most important thing was that he felt calm, because when the client feels calm, everything else follows.
Within those seven minutes, I completed the trimmers section.
He gently replaced the tubing, and afterwards he sat quietly, a little breathless, while we chatted and allowed him time to settle again.
It was a small window of time, but it carried a great deal of responsibility.
Experiences like this shape the way I work. They remind me that every client brings different needs, and that with calm thinking and a flexible approach, there is almost always a way to adapt.
Sometimes that means working around medical equipment.
Sometimes it means adjusting positioning.
Sometimes it means thinking creatively about how to keep someone comfortable and safe.
For example, when working with those in recliners or wheelchair users, I often adapt the setup — using capes differently, adjusting angles, or working around the chair itself to keep things tidy and comfortable.
It’s about thinking outside the box and tailoring the haircut to the person, not expecting the person to fit a standard setup.
Haircuts in medical or adaptive care settings often require flexibility, patience, and careful planning. At Blaker’s Blades, I work calmly around mobility needs, medical equipment, and individual comfort levels, ensuring each client feels safe and supported throughout. My work is all about trust, reassurance, and care, through kindness.
